Rimac Technologies, which is indeed linked to the Rimac Automobili behind the ballistic Nevera hypercar, has just announced that it has agreed to a long-term partnership with BMW Group. As part of the deal, the two companies will collaborate on the production of battery packs for BMW's next-generation EVs. These batteries will be supplied and built at the Rimac Campus just outside of Zagreb, Croatia.

BMW hasn't told us how it plans to implement Rimac's battery packs in its cars, nor did it specify whether Mini or Rolls-Royce would benefit from the partnership as well. The automaker only stated that the batteries would make their way into "select battery-electric vehicles," which we assume could be the upcoming batch of Neue Klasse-based EVs. As of now, BMW aims for half of its sales to account for fully electric vehicles by 2030.

Mate Rimac, the 36-year-old founder and CEO of Rimac Group, discussed his connections with BMW early in his career, when he fitted a fully-electric powertrain into his personal E30 BMW 3-Series back in 2007:

"My business journey began with a 1984 BMW 3 Series that I converted into an electric car in my garage at the age of 20 so it’s a perfect piece of symmetry to partner with the BMW Group today. This marks a pivotal moment in the growth of Rimac Technology, from humble beginnings to a major long-term partnership with one of the greatest automotive brands in the world. It’s a clear sign of the transition of Rimac Technology from niche high-performance supplier to high-volume production capability. With the relentless growth of our business, including the opening of Rimac Campus, we’re now ready to deliver large-scale projects for the leading brands in the automotive industry."

Rimac stated that a "substantial portion" of the facilities at the Rimac Campus in Croatia will be set aside and retooled for what he considers to be "the largest and most ambitious project the company has ever undertaken." That includes the installation of new automated production lines to ramp up production of BMW's batteries.
