Porsche's one-off 911 Sally Special has sold for a record $3.6 million at the RM Sotheby's Monterey Auction on Saturday, making it the priciest new Porsche ever sold at auction. In fact, it sold for 25 times more than the regular Carrera GTS it's based on.
The Sally Special received "significant interest" according to Porsche, with the final offer coming from a telephone bidder.
This one-off 911 was made to honor Sally Carrera from Pixar's Cars, as the film character turns 20 this year. The team who first created Sally Carrera came together with Porsche's Exclsuive Manufaktur division to make this project happen, along with designers from Style Porsche. This special edition is based on the 992-generation Carrera GTS, with styling touches that take inspiration from the original Sally character, who was based on the 996-generation car.
“I’ve loved playing the role of Sally for the past 16 years, she has a special place in my heart, and it’s wonderful that her personality and values continue to inspire new generations today," said Bonnie Hunt, who played the voice of Sally Carrera. "The car looked amazing, and I know the team put their heart and souls into creating it. I am thrilled for the new owner who has something very special, and completely unique."
The winning bidder also received a car cover, a set of track-oriented wheels, a Sally-themed timepiece, and a scrapbook from Cars production designer Bob Pauley.
