Volkswagen just got the wraps off its updated Golf lineup, but absent from the event was the most potent hatchback of all––the Golf R. But don't fret, the spiced-up Golf is still on its way, though we won't see it in full until later this year. Until then, VW has given us an early look by bringing camouflaged prototypes to the Zell am See ice race in Austria.

While the camouflage wrap cleverly disguises the styling updates with fake designs resembling the current model, some of the changes made to the Golf R are still visible. We can see that its lighting elements are in for some revisions, and the lower front fascia appears to be updated as well.

Under the hood, the Golf R is likely to feature the same 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-four. The current iteration produces 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque when paired with its seven-speed automatic, though it remains to be seen whether those numbers will be bumped up. Unfortunately, the latest Golf R will also follow the recently-updated Golf GTI in dropping its manual transmission option.

Of course, full details on the new Golf R will come to light when it's revealed later in 2024, but it's already clear that this refresh won't be too major.
