The 641-horsepower Hyundai RN22e was slated to be Hyundai's attention-grabber at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, but the electric prototype based on the Ioniq 6 didn't exactly get the attention Hyundai wanted on Thursday. The one-of-one RN22e sustained considerable damage when it crashed into multiple rows of hay bales, after missing a notoriously tight left turn.
After heading through the straightaway past the Goodwood House, the RN22e understeered the sharp left-hand turn that followed, sending the prototype straight into rows of hay bales, which subsequently became clouds of dust and straw. It's difficult to see exactly what caused the Hyundai to plow through the bales of hay, as the accident occurred through one of Goodwood's close-up cameras. But with the instant power provided by EVs like the RN22e, its speed through the straightaway may have been carried too far into the turn. It should also be noted that this is a prototype used to test Hyundai N's electric abilities, so there may have been a malfunction involved.
In the end, the crash resulted in a mess of body panels and other bits strewn across the flattened hay. Goodwood never provided a full view of the RN22e after the crash, though luckily the damage mostly appears to be cosmetic. While the drivers appeared to be fine, the one-of-one Hyundai will have to undergo some costly repairs before it can hit the road again.
The timing of this accident is unfortunate for Hyundai, as Thursday's runs were untimed to demonstrate the cars before they headed into the tougher, timed competition over the following days. With its hard crash damaging it beyond drivability for the near future, the RN22e just missed its chance to become Hyundai N's star of the show.
