The first day of this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed went down with plenty of action, though unfortunately not all of it went according to plan. Things went awry when the left rear wheel of a classic Jaguar Mk1, driven by longtime Goodwood driver Grant Williams, wobbled and came off as the car moved onto a straightaway after its second turn. The uncontrolled wheel then bounced and rolled alongside the Jaguar, before turning off slightly just in time to catch air and go flying into the crowd.

An undisclosed number of spectators were hit by the loose wheel, though officials later confirmed there were no serious injuries and that those involved were well enough to return to the event. However, as a result of the incident, the racing was paused for around 40 minutes before it returned with a McLaren Artura speeding through the hillclimb.

Exactly how the Jaguar's wheel came loose is unknown, but it's worth noting that the tires were warmed up at the starting line with a burnout. The Jaguar also showcased subtle drifting action through each turn, though we've seen many other cars go sideways during their runs.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed will continue through July 16, though hopefully we won't see any other incidents like this.
