The Volvo S60 is a highly underrated alternative to the BMW 3-Series, but its charming Swedish flair just wasn't enough to turn the luxury compact sedan segment on its head. Now, after a 24-year run in which the nameplate went through three generations, Volvo is wrapping up S60 production at its South Carolina plant this month.
While the S60 will remain on sale in other markets for now, Volvo is pulling the plug on the model in North America to make way for production of the fully-electric EX90 crossover at the same South Carolina facility. The automaker hopes the EX90 will rake in more profit than the sedan it replaces, as the third-generation S60 barely crested 20,000 units in annual sales since its introduction for the 2019 model year. More recently, the sedan only managed to move around 10,000 units each year. By comparison, German rivals have been selling three times as many 3-Series and C-Class sedans annually, with those models hovering around an average of 30,000 units.
It's disappointing to see a beautiful sedan like the S60 die so quietly, and since the third-generation model became the first Volvo to undergo assembly in the U.S., a less modest goodbye would be better deserved. However, Volvo hopes to see the EX90 move off the lots more quickly. Production of the three-row SUV already kicked off earlier this month, and it offers a large 111.0-kWh battery pack allowing for nearly 300 miles of range and a choice of punchy 402-hp and 496-hp variants.
The EX90 starts at $77,990, and it should begin shipping to dealer lots across North America in the coming weeks.
