Acura's new MDX has been revealed, following the footsteps of the 2021 TLX sedan. It now features all new styling, including the sharp headlights and taillights similar to the TLX, as well as an updated diamond grille. The new MDX is 2.8 inches longer than before, and the longer hood wider stance give it a sporty appearance. The MDX now has six color options, including the new Phantom Violet Pearl. The revised A-Spec performance trim adds Shark Gray wheels, shaded headlights and taillights, and dark chrome finishes.
The 2022 MDX runs on a new platform that is said to improve dynamics and rigidity, key ingredients to a more robust SUV. Also, double-wishbone front suspension and multilink rear suspension makes the ride more smooth, and improves stability and handling. Acura has also tweaked the steering to make it more responsive. The 3.5 liter V6 engine is accompanied by a ten-speed automatic, as well as increased power and fuel economy. Another smart feature is Acura's brand-new active shutter grille that can close in certain conditions to sustain aerodynamics. The MDX is available in front wheel drive or all wheel drive.
Inside, the MDX is much more luxurious with open-pore wood accents, brushed aluminum trim, and soft Milano leather seats and upholstery. The standard sport seats include twelve-way adjustment and three-way heating. The A-Spec version gets ventilated seats. The more dynamic second row seats can fold to create three seating arrangements, including bench seats, and when the middle seat is folded down, captain's chairs. Owners can also remove the middle seat entirely for easier third row access. The roomier third row gains 0.4 inches of headroom and 2.4 inches of legroom. Cargo space has also been increased due to a larger wheelbase. The more advanced interior sees the new touchscreen interface replace most of the physical controls. It boasts a touchpad layout and measures 12.3 inches. A head-up display is available as well.
Acura is preparing the first-ever MDX Type S, which should have a more powerful 3.0 liter turbocharged V6, raising the horsepower output to 355. It will look even better than the A-Spec with a diamond mesh grille, quad exhaust pipes, four-piston Brembo front brake calipers, larger 21-inch wheels, and black gloss instead of the regular MDX's chrome trimmings. The Type S will also carry an even more lavish interior with massaging front seats, more colors and materials to choose from, and an upgraded audio system with 1,000 watts, 25 speakers throughout, and a whopping 22 channels.
AcuraWatch safety features are enhanced, with improved road departure mitigation, traffic jam assist, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, and a driver attention monitor. The 2022 MDX is coming very soon, because they'll start popping up at dealer lots on February 2, 2021 with a starting price of $46,900. AWD variants will be raised to $48,900. A $1,025 destination charge will be added. The Type S is coming in late summer of 2021.
