At launch, the Lexus RX helped to create the booming luxury crossover segment we have today, whether you like it or not. Fast forward to 2023, and the RX is moving on to its fifth generation with a full redesign, and the hopes of bringing itself back to the top of the segment.
Despite the evolutionary styling changes, this RX undergoes major adjustments behind the sheetmetal with a new GA-K global platform. Tweaked materials in the framework make the RX 198 pounds lighter than before, while a new multi-link rear suspension connects to a high-torsion frame for more rigidity and improved suspension inputs. Even though the RX is the same size as before, the rear wheels have been moved back to create a shorter rear overhang, and the wheelbase has been lengthened by 2.36 inches. The GA-K platform also allows for a lower center of gravity, better weight distribution, and a roomier cabin for rear passengers.
The most noticeable change at first glance, however, is the 2023 RX’s refreshed styling. Lexus does away with the spindle grille, once a design staple for the brand, and transforms it into a shadow of its former self. A new trapezoidal grille sits lower on the front fascia, but its mesh pattern continues until it reaches the hood shut line, suggesting the presence of an evolved spindle design. Refreshed headlights flank the half-invisible grille, putting the RX in line with the ever-changing design direction of other Lexus SUVs. A cleaner side profile is credited to softer character lines and more rounded wheel wells, not to say that the largely unchanged greenhouse isn't aggressive. A lower center of gravity achieves a more menacing stance, especially with the large 21-inch wheels, though smaller 19-inchers are also available. In back, the taillights receive stronger L-shaped lighting signatures, which now span the entire rear fascia with a new light bar.
Ten exterior colors will be offered for the 2023 RX, including Ultra White, Eminent White Pearl, Iridium, Caviar, Nebula Gray Pearl, Matador Red Mica, Nori Green Pearl, Copper Crest, Grecian Water, and Nightfall Mica.
The interior is another big upgrade for the redesigned RX, and it's largely inspired by the smaller NX's revolutionary cabin. It all starts with a new e-Latch door handle, which is a unique touch for newer Lexus crossovers. Multi-color welcome lighting greets RX owners, and while the small light show is sure to impress, the real star of the show is the new 14-inch touchscreen display. This display is much bigger than what you'll find in any fourth-gen RX, and it runs on Lexus's new Interface infotainment. The 14-inch screen is exclusive to the more expensive trims, but customers will be happy to know that Lexus Interface is standard on all models. Lexus says that the RX's interior is based on a driver-centric design, so steering wheel controls, the optional head-up display, and other functions are laid out in a way that looks to reduce driver distraction. Up above, an available panoramic glass roof makes the cabin appear more spacious and airy.
Interior colors for the 2023 RX include Birch, Macadamia Black, Peppercorn, Rioja Red, and Palomino. There are also four different interior finishes available, including Ash Bamboo, Black Cascade, Black Open Pore and Dark Graphite Aluminum.
Four new powertrains show that the RX is all about electrification. There is no full EV version available, but the usual hybrid powertrain is now accompanied by a first-ever plug-in-hybrid. However, Lexus won't provide any details regarding the RX 450h+ PHEV right now. Meanwhile, the RX 350h features all-wheel drive as standard, with a more powerful 2.5-liter inline-four engine under the hood. The electric motor is positioned on the front axle. As for the regular gas RX 350, which is offered in both front- and all-wheel drive variants, a smaller turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four allows for more fuel efficiency and more power than the old V6.
At launch, the RX will be offered in six different trim levels. This includes the first-ever F Sport Performance flagship model, which features a hybrid powertrain, alongside the Standard, Premium, all-new Premium+, Luxury, and F Sport Handling. The 2023 Lexus RX will arrive later this year, and we expect pricing to rise compared to last year's model.
Do you think the new RX will make its way back to the head of its segment?

Why does the front look so weird.. should've stuck with the full grille because this is even worse.
