Alfa Romeo is currently working on a large vehicle tailored for the US market, with production set to begin in 2027. The company is still in the midst of figuring out which body style this new model will have, though it's most likely that it will take the shape of an SUV or sedan.
Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Phillip Imparato told Reuters that the vehicle won't be a direct competitor to SUVs like the BMW X5. In fact, it could end up being more of a crossover-sedan mashup like the Peugeot 408. "We want to find the right mix," he said. "It's a decision we will take by the end of this year."
Even though the model's development is taking place in America, Alfa Romeo remains skeptical about manufacturing it in the US. "Producing in the US is not something we have decided and it is something we don't want to decide now," Imparato said.
Exactly what will be powering this vehicle is up in the air at this point, but since Alfa's goal to go all-electric by 2027 coincides with this model's launch, it's most likely that it will be an EV. If so, it will be joining five other new battery electric vehicles from the Italian brand, including a small crossover and the next-generation Giulia sedan.
Alfa Romeo isn't done with ICE's yet, however, as it plans on revealing a low-volume sports car concept next year. If consumers show enough interest, a production version will be introduced by 2025, and will probably be the last gas-powered Alfa model ever. That being said, the rumored GTV coupe might not be dead after all.
Do you think Alfa Romeo will be able to better establish itself in the US market with this larger model?
