The track-only Aston Martin Valkyrie has been the British automaker's first road-legal hypercar in a while, and as the AMR Pro track-only version joins the coupe, a new Valkyrie Spider has been revealed in Pebble Beach, California to further add to the lineup.
Aston says the performance car's powerful V12 engine has been untouched, as well as most of its other powertrain components, with the biggest change being the tweaked carbon fiber body, which goes way beyond the convertible roof. The aerodynamics system is different, with parts of the carefully-designed "teardrop-shaped" cabin on the upper body and large Venturi tunnels covering the lower body. These two design elements work together to direct the airflow under the vehicle and through the rear diffuser, preventing the tweaked convertible-style upper body from interrupting the Valkyrie's incredible driving experience, which tries to stay close to the 'hardtop' version. The Valkyrie Spider is said to have around 1400 kilograms of downforce in Track mode when reaching 150 miles per hour (240 km/h).
The Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider can max out at 205 miles per hour on the UK's vMAX test track, making it the quickest road-legal Aston Martin convertible in its history while remaining impressively relevant to the coupe's 217-mph top speed. It is proven that the Valkyrie Spider is capable of reaching the speed of an Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1) car, which is incredible for any street vehicle.
The Valkyrie Spider's unique removable roof is reportedly very lightweight, with a central panel consisting of carbon fiber. Another interesting feature is two polycarbonate roof windows, which let in light from above the car and adding to the light that enters through the windshield and permanent side windows. It connects to the vehicle by latches in the "tub" by the hypercar's rear, and on the windscreen surround in front. Removing the roof seems much easier, as Aston Martin describes it, as "it can simply be lifted off and stowed away." Changes to the doors have been made to accommodate with the convertible format, so the coupe's gullwing doors are nowhere to be found. They are replaced by front-hinged dihedral doors that tilt forward so that there is no intervention with the removable top.
Its interior is very similar to the standard Valkyrie, boasting a Formula 1-inspired cockpit with an almost central two-seat driving position and low ride height. Of course, it also comes included with 6-point safety harnesses to protect occupants at high speeds. The safety features drip into the technology category as well, with a rear-view parking camera and front and rear parking sensors active at all speeds and a dedicated display near the instrument cluster.
Even though the Aston Martin Valkyrie hasn't reached customers yet after a long five years, Aston Martin says the Valkyrie Spider is well into its development process. An exclusive 85 examples will be made, and deliveries are said to begin as soon as the second half of 2022. The Valkyrie Spider will be displayed at the Pebble Beach events until August 15, and can only be viewed with an invitation from Aston Martin.
