Base Volvo V60, V90 Bite The Dust In The US

Volvo sits next to Audi and Mercedes as one of the few automakers that still offer wagons in the US. This vehicle type is often overlooked here, as buyers flock to SUVs and crossovers. Wagons offer cavernous trunk space, while having the sporty performance and low ride height. The Volvo V60 and V90 are being discontinued in the US, for the most part.

Starting with the larger V90, which is based on the lavish Volvo S90 large sedan, it is not the most popular car in Volvo’s lineup. The standard version of this sleek wagon was only available by order in the US, so not having any V90 models on dealer lots obviously didn’t help sales. For 2022, customers will only be able to reach the V90 in Cross Country form, which features a higher ride height and SUV-like styling. The rest of this wagon’s trim lineup is gone forever. V90 Cross Country sales are much more dominant, as these models are present at dealerships, and the crossover-like design attracts more customers.

The smaller V60 wagon, which is based on the S60 sedan, sees a similar fate, though less variants are being dropped. The V60 keeps the Cross Country like the V90, but buyers will also have access to the sporty Polestar model through 2022. The Volvo V60 Polestar may not be as popular as the rugged Cross Country, but Volvo probably made this move to highlight the role that electrification plays in the V60. The Polestar version is indeed a plug-in hybrid, which gives it relevance to the all-electric Polestar brand.

We are glad to see the Volvo V90 and V60 continue onto another model year in some way, but with Volvo's previous announcements of possibly discontinuing some sedans and wagons, we wouldn't be surprised if Volvo's last two wagon models are living on borrowed time.
