BMW Hasn't Ruled Out Plans for An M Supercar

The upcoming XM crossover will be BMW M's first standalone model since the M1, but an authentic successor to the old supercar has yet to arrive. BMW has been pondering the idea of a new M supercar for years, but despite reports that the model has been canned, the German automaker told Autocar that there's still hope for a true M1 replacement.

BMW's quirky i8 hybrid was the closest we ever got to having a new-age M1, but the supercar was axed a few years ago without any direct successors. The 2019 Vision M concept was supposed to take its place, but the project has since been cancelled.

Speaking to Autocar, BMW M boss Frank van Meel said that he is still open with the idea of an M1 successor. "It’s always something we can look at. As car guys, we are always dreaming of making such cars. It doesn’t mean we’ll make them, but we keep exploring those ideas."

Just because the Vision M didn't end up going into production "doesn’t mean we’re not thinking of a super-sports car," van Meel continued. "I’m always trying to figure out how it [would] work." But it's no secret that the XM high-performance SUV became the division's top priority. "It was not priority number one, but from the heart it always has a high priority, and that’s what we are always looking at," he commented. "We don’t need to prove we are a sporty company."

Even though BMW M won't be building its own supercar anytime soon, there are still a lot of sporty Bimmers to look forward to in the near future as the division celebrates its 50th anniversary.
