BMW I8 Final Review

Writer: TurbochargedTurbocharged

The cool, sleek i8 electric sports car will be discontinued this April. It will, sadly, come up fast. The replacement is not nearly as exciting. The i8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). We hope to see the car again in the future when BMW looks to fill in the blanks in its growing electric lineup. We will miss it a lot, especially because of its futuristic looks and outstanding performance. Back in 2015, the i8 was ahead of its time, convincing most people what the future of cars, mostly from BMW, would look like. The high price of $147,500 and that its outgoing style might not be for everyone, turning sports car buyers away. The BMW i8 Roadster was the coolest of the lineup, being a very fast, efficient and beautiful car.

The interior is iconic, yet the i8 only had 5 years to live, and went through just one generation, so in that case, it did not have enough time to be an icon like the VW Beetle did.

The infotainment screen was pretty decent for 2015, and the overall design is amazing.

The optional blue lines add an electric personality, while the digital speedometer makes it look like a concept car. Will the upcoming i4 have this interior in March? Probably not, which is sad. The main cause of decreased sales was likely because the i8 was ahead of its time. It could be a 2022 model year vehicle, yet it looked like this back in 2015, which is amazing. Most cars that come out very futuristic are discontinued. Also, look at the doors! They do not really have handles, which adds to the futuristic looks.

Here are the key features:

- Price: $147,500

- Engine: 1.5 Liter 3-Cylinder

- Horsepower: 369

- Top Speed: 155 mph

- 0-60 mph: 3.8 to 4.6 seconds

- MPG: 2.1 L/100 km (134.5 mpg‑imp; 112.0 mpg‑US) with carbon emissions of 49 g/km.

- Length: 15'5"

- Seating: 2 adults

It is sad to say goodbye to such a cool car, but we hope the coming replacements are just as good. The i8 was a real car that had the features and style of a concept car; setting up BMW's electric future. We hope to see the i8 nameplate again in the next decade.
