BMW turned into the laughing stock of the automotive industry when they rolled out the 4 Series with its big grille. With the following reveals of the iX, M3 and M4, and the i4, we realized that we'll just have to get used to it. BMW agrees, for the most part. They have stated before that their controversial "double coffin" grille may not please everyone, but they will keep adding it to the lineup despite that. The most recent statement from BMW regarding their new grille is from BMW Blog's interview of BMW's Head of Design Domagoj Dukec.

To make us feel better about where the luxury brand is going with their design, he said that the big grilles are "best experienced in person," and "we believe that customers will have a different opinion of the new kidney grille when they see the new M3/M4 in real life."

On top of the fact that the German automaker shows no sign of going back to the normal kidney grilles we remember, the interview also looked at BMW's other iconic design cues. Dukec said he believes that icons will have to evolve over time. For example, BMW's well-known circular headlamps from the previous BMW 4 Series and other models have been thrown away, due to the new grilles. Now, they are more like curvy semicircles. The most missed icon that BMW is beginning to drop is the Hofmeister Kink, which dates back to the 1960's, and is a slight curve upward on the rear side windows of BMW models.

BMW is changing their well-known design drastically, which is shocking, therefore turning away, some BMW fans. Let's just hope that they're right about seeing the new M4's grille in person.
