BMW Z4 Could Gain A Manual Transmission For 2023

The Z4 is one of the most remarkable models in BMW's current lineup, combining a head-turning two-door roadster silhouette with the automaker's powerful B58 straight-six engine. But US buyers may have noticed that the Z4 is missing just one thing, and that would be a manual transmission.

Citing unnamed sources, BMW Blog said that the German marque is considering a six-speed manual option for the US-spec Z4 for the 2023 model year, which is when it's expected to receive a small mid-cycle refresh. According to the report, the stick shift will be exclusive to the sportier M40i trim level. The publication also mentioned that next year's update will also include minor styling tweaks when it launches later in 2022.

Last month, it was revealed that the Z4's Toyota clone, the Supra, is also gaining a six-speed manual for 2023. Since the Supra shares many substantial components with the Z4, it's very likely that BMW will follow suit. Even though the market no longer shows much interest towards roadsters, a manual gearbox would further emphasize this German two-door's fun-to-drive ethos.

BMW Blog said that the US will be one of very few markets that will be getting the Z4 manual, showing that it still has some life left in it before EVs fully take over. But it's not only the stick shift that could be biting the dust within the next decade, as this current generation might be the last Z4 ever.

Are you happy to hear that the Z4 is gaining a manual?
