Could Imminent FCA-PSA Merger See Some Models, And Even Brands, Go Away?

Writer: TurbochargedTurbocharged

FCA and PSA are merging to create Stellantis, the third largest auto group. The boss of Stellantis hinted at the demise of some models, and even brands. Even though he didn't mention any names, we can guess a few vehicles that could leave us sooner or later.

The merger is largely based on cutting costs, including sharing and creating new platforms, sharing other resources like engines and transmissions, and cutting the lineup a bit. The brand aims to start over in China, and that change could spread to other markets, including the US. That means the 13-brand automotive giant could lessen to twelve, or even eleven.

One automaker that might leave us is Lancia. Lancia has been struggling ever since the 21st century began. Originally a Europe-exclusive automaker admired by enthusiasts all over, the automaker has tried and failed many times towards reviving themselves. In 2011, they overhauled their lineup and introduced a batch of rebadged Chryslers. Barely two years later, the whole lineup was dropped. The Ypsilon hatchback is what keeps the brand alive to this day, but no changes since at least 2010 have led to very slow sales. Now, the brand only sells their one-model lineup in Italy. The brand isn't expected to return to their heritage anytime soon. In a few years, Lancia could very well be dropped entirely.

Other candidates of discontinuation are the Chrysler 300, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, Citroen C5 Aircross, Fiat 500L, and the Chrysler brand. It'll be interesting to see the changes Stellantis will make in the future.
