Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept Brings A Burst Of Orange To New York

Genesis has taken to New York City to unveil its GV80 Coupe Concept, a very orange four-seater that previews the Korean brand's first whack at the trendy coupe SUV segment. It also follows the trio of Genesis X sports car concepts in an endeavor to infuse a new sense of sportiness into the automaker's image.

While many luxury brands have failed in their attempts to create coupe versions of their SUVs, the GV80 fits the look well. The concept swaps out the SUV's more conventional silhouette for a sleeker carbon fiber roof that slopes into a ducktail rear spoiler. Up front, a more aggressive front fascia features darkened air intakes surrounded by blacked out detailing, while the rear features a pair of stylish full-width light bars inspired by Genesis's "two lines" design philosophy. The GV80 Coupe Concept wears a bright, extroverted shade of Magma orange exterior paint, which is meant to mimic the volcanoes that border the Korean peninsula.

The concept's interior is cloaked in black Nappa and suede leather surfaces, and features four Alcantara-laden bucket seats bearing a double-stitched plaid pattern with orange piping. That same orange-on-black plaid pattern is also used on the door panels and center console, while the carbon fiber seatbacks are coated in the Magma orange paint used on the exterior. A cross brace has been added to the back of the cabin to increase sturctural stiffness.

Despite everything going electric these days, the GV80 Coupe Concept is powered by a gas-powered V6. Genesis didn't tell us what exactly is equipped under the hood, and while the regular GV80 does utilize a twin-turbo V6, we're hoping the sportier coupe uses the 409-horsepower, supercharger-assisted V6 used in the flagship G90 sedan.

When the GV80 Coupe Concept was revealed ahead of the New York Auto Show, Genesis acknowledged that there will in fact be a production version. We've already spotted prototypes of the GV80's sportier counterpart, so we shouldn't have to wait too long.

Would you choose the sportier GV80 coupe over the more practical SUV?
