GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Off-Road Concept Revealed With 33" Tires

New off-road vehicles seem to be popping up everywhere, following a new trend for overlanding and driving to places that a normal car couldn't. While GM doesn't yet offer a Bronco or Wrangler competitor, they are adding lots of brawny pickups to challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX. The latest of which is GMC's new Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Off-Road Concept, which packs more than enough upgrades to climb over rocks or plow through small rivers. This loaded truck is being showcased at the Overland Expo Mountain West off-roading venue, which is kicking off this weekend.

As the name suggests, the OVRLANDX is essentially a heavily customized version of the GMC Canyon AT4. GMC says the OVRLANDX's off-road chassis was lifted at the factory to make ten full inches of ground clearance, and there is a 27.7-degree approach angle. GMC widened the chassis and gave the concept more underbody coverage as well. Rocker panel protectors, an off-road front bumper with a winch, and an AEV off-road rear bumper are additionally included. For even more damage resistance, control arms made of cast iron are also found on the Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX. Guy lines on the front windshield protect it from low tree branches and any other low-hanging objects that come your way. For when the truck finds itself stuck in relentless terrain, recovery points are integrated within the front bumper, and electronic locking differentials are positioned in both front and rear. There are also Multimatic DSSV dampers to keep the wheels connected to the ground and gain more traction.

You can mount a spare tire on the tailgate of this concept, and can swivel out of the way to allow access to the tailgate and bed. A stainless steel bed cap protects the contents inside, and prevent items from falling out during steep hill climbs. Also in the bed is a drawer system to easily store small items. Speaking of wheels, the Canyon OVRLANDX features huge 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires on 17-inch AEV Crestone rims. It can go water fording in 32.1 inches at most, and a custom snorkel keeps the air intake filtered and cooled. If you need a little downtime after driving over the desert, GMC added a roof-mounted tent to the OVRLANDX with a 270-degree awning. There are also jerry cans can store gasoline or water, a cooler, a solar panel, and an entire kitchenette to make the campout a bit more luxurious. Traction boards and an off-road jack and mount finish the long list of features in the Canyon AT4 Off-Road OVRLANDX Concept.

The Canyon AT4 OVERLANDX's exterior design blends all of these accessories quite well, and features an LED lightbar mounted onto the front bumper and lighting up in front of the exclusive mesh grille. Slightly altered AT4 emblems are found throughout the concept, and the interior is wrapped in genuine leather. If you were hoping that the will OVRLANDX translate into a production vehicle, it depends on whether you like it or not. "Consumer reaction to this concept's design will help us further serve the growing market of buyers leading authentic outdoor lifestyles," said Duncan Aldred, the Buick and GMC Global Vice President. While the Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX is just a fun concept, we hope a truck just like this enters production at some point.
