The Mazda CX-9 gets rid of its entry-level Sport trim for the 2023 model year, making the mid-range Touring the new base model. Pricing has risen up to $40,025, but more standard equipment has been added to make up for the huge increase.

The Touring gains second-row captain's chairs as standard, with a choice between black or sand leather seating. The new base model also adds a power moonroof, wireless phone charger, and LED fog lights. Moving up to the $42,775 Touring Plus sees the captain's chairs traded out for more traditional bench seating, though the former layout is still available as an option. Higher trims don't see any significant changes, but prices have still risen slightly.

Powertrains remain the same as before, with a 2.5 liter turbo under the hood. Other models equipped with this engine have gotten a small horsepower boost for 2023, but the CX-9's output stays at 250 horses for the new year. The engine is still paired with a six-speed automatic, sending power to all four wheels with all-wheel drive.

It seems that Mazda is beginning to slow down with the CX-9, which has become long in the tooth in recent years. The automaker is planning on replacing it with the CX-90 next year, which will introduce a new turbocharged inline-six powertrain, and is expected to offer more space for rear passengers. The aging CX-9 will continue production alongside its more premium successor for at least one more year.
