Mazda has announced in a press release that their Mazda6 midsize sedan is not coming back to the US in 2022. The Japanese automaker admitted that they are “proud“ of the Mazda6 and its features, but the ever-changing taste of buyers leaves their flagship sedan with not much popularity.
Proof of this is that sales have plummted to just over 16,000 sales last year compared to 57,000 five years prior, and that was not a good sign. But we all know that crossovers are the most popular vehicle type right now, and it is causing many sedans, convertibles, coupes and hatchbacks to be on the chopping block. On top of that, the 6 hasn’t received a new generation since 2014. A facelift in 2017 has kept the Mazda6 relevant, but the much newer competitors from Kia, Toyota, Hyundai and Subaru have attracted far more customers.
It is sad to see Mazda’s premium-feeling Mazda6 go, but the automaker has a completely revised version in the works alongside the CX-5 crossover’s replacement, the CX-50. The fact that the Mazda6 is leaving is in 2022 could be a similar move to Honda, who ceased selling the Honda Civic Si performance sedan to make way for the new 2022 model. This means that the luxurious rear-wheel drive Mazda6 we have been waiting for could be on its way for 2023. It might be a long wait, but it should be worth it.
