Mercedes Wants To Focus On The More Expensive Models

Mercedes was always known for selling expensive luxury cars, but lately, they've been focusing more on their cheaper models. That includes the A-Class, CLA, GLA, GLB, and overseas B-Class. Mercedes' CEO has hinted at putting more attention towards their more luxurious models, performance models, technology, and electrification. The groundbreaking new S-Class will be arriving shortly, and an entire lineup of electric models, the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE, EQS, and EQS SUV, along with some upcoming AMG models. Also, Maybach, the automaker's ultra-luxury sub-brand, is expanding. So, this huge vehicle lineup is only going to grow. Mercedes knows that they'll have to cut costs sooner or later. That could mean discontinuing lots of models.

The A-Class was introduced to attract younger buyers, and it did tis job well. The bigger CLA four-door coupe has the same purpose, and it is a great competitor to the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. But, it might be time to say goodbye to those models at some point. Mercedes also already confirmed the discontinuation of the S-Class coupe and convertible, E-Class coupe and convertible, SLC/SLK, and C-Class coupe and convertible. They will be replaced by a single model called the 'CLE'.

The B-Class minivan sold in Europe is also a cheaper offering from Mercedes. That model might be scrapped in 2022. Other candidates could be the GLA and GLB compact crossovers. They sell well, but Mercedes stated that they don't want to compete with mainstream automakers like Buick and Toyota.

Some slow-selling vehicles are on the ropes as well. Earlier this year, rumors went around stating that the CLS and AMG GT 4-Door luxury four-door coupes would go away. Slow sales point the answer to yes, but the two models fight each other in the same segment, so at least one of them will go. News has also spread that their Sprinter and Metris vans are also on the ropes. So, with all of these models in doubt, the ones that stay will maintain luxury and sustainability.
