After the Ford Fusion sedan was discontinued, that left the iconic pony car as the only non-crossover in the lineup. It will stay that way for a while, too. The current generation has been around since 2014, receiving a facelift in 2018. This current version should remain almost the same until 2022, when a new generation is to debut. Expect the coupe, EcoBoost, and convertible first, with new Shelby, Bullitt, Mach 1, and GT500 variants coming around 2026. The Mach E will remain mostly unchanged.

Originally, Ford wanted the new generation to span six years, but now they what to keep the car around for another decade before another new generation or discontinuation. It will run on a rear-wheel-drive modular platform that underpins Ford's Explorer and Lincoln's Aviator. Currently, the Ford Explorer's wheelbase is a foot longer than the Mustang, meaning that the redesign will include increases in size.

After the next generation is fully underway in 2023, a 'major facelift' is to arrive in 2025.
