When Nissan teased their updated model portfolio in their Nissan Next video last summer, it didn't include the next-generation GT-R, puzzling fans. Well, we don't have a reason why but we now know that the new sports car is coming in 2022. This vehicle is long-awaited, as the current model is at least a decade old.

Details have been hidden for a while now, but reports claim that the GT-R will use hybrid power. This is because the current GT-R's V6 engine doesn't meet Japan's tightening emissions regulations. The car will have a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup with an integrated starter-generator unit, compact lithium-ion battery pack, and small electric motor. The GT-R's engine sound will be reduced as well due to Japan's CAFE, or Corporate Average Fuel Economy rules.

Although a mild-hybrid system and less noise sounds weak, the electric motor will increase horsepower and torque a lot over the current GT-R, especially the high-performance Nismo. Despite being an all-new generation, the next GT-R will keep its current PM (Premium Midship) platform. It is a similar move to the Z Proto and 370Z, and Nissan is doing it because it cuts costs.

The GT-R will debut in late 2022, going on sale in 2024. The current GT-R will be just about twenty years old by then, so of course Nissan will make a big deal and bring out a special edition. Well, they will. Simply called 'Final Edition', this exclusive car will only be built in 20 units, costing around $380,000. The GT-R's 3.8 liter V6 will be upgraded, bringing 710 horsepower.
