Next Toyota 86 Could Bring Back Celica Nameplate

Toyota's 86 sports car is getting a redesign soon, and its Subaru sibling, the BRZ has already been redesigned for 2022. Toyota hasn't even discussed the next 86 yet, but spy shots confirm that a new generation is on the way. The company has recently trademarked the Celica name. The Toyota Celica was sold throughout the 1970's, 80's, and 90's until its discontinuation in 2006. Could this be why the new 86 hasn't been revealed?

Toyota hinted at the next 86 being known as the GR86, copying the GR Supra. The Celica name makes sense for the 86, especially because the slow-selling coupe could use some more recognition. Just look at the Supra.

Ever since Scion stopped production and the FR-S became the 86, Toyota has expressed interest in reviving the Celica and MR2 nameplates. The latest Supra and current 86 both had the Celica name under consideration, so this seems like the perfect time to bring back an icon. On the other hand, automakers sometimes patent old names to keep the rights, so don't get excited just yet.
