This week, Tesla went above and beyond at the opening of its newest production facility, in Austin, Texas. Cyber Rodeo saw the debut of new FSD (Full Self-Driving) software beta, an upcoming robotaxi, and a more production-ready Cybertruck among the fireworks, drones, and Dr. Dre music. In other words, this was more than just an opening ceremony.
Giga Texas is a massive new gigafactory that boasts 338 million square feet of space. Musk says that it if it stood vertically, it would measure an unworldly 3,826 feet. This would dwarf the Burj Khalifa in comparison, as it stands at 2,772 feet tall. He also predicted that Giga Texas will be capable of producing a million vehicles each year, with Model Y units counting for half of that number. This incredibly large facility will also manufacture batteries for the cars in the production assembly sector.
The new factory will mainly be pumping out Model Ys, but the upcoming Cybertruck will also be rolling off the factory floor at Giga Texas. Tesla introduced a more production-worthy Cybertruck at the event, and promised that the electric truck will launch in 2023. The updated truck now features side mirrors and other small adjustments, as required by law. There are still no door handles, though, and Elon Musk claims that the Cybertruck senses when the driver wants to enter the vehicle.
Musk said that his company will use the remainder of this year to get Giga Texas fully up and running, before a "massive wave of new products" arrives in 2023. Aside from the Cybertruck, a "quite futuristic" robotaxi is slated for next year, and the first edition of the Optimus humanoid robot is also on its way. Musk said that the Optimus will "transform the world in a degree even greater than the cars."
What do you think of the tweaked Cybertruck?
