Surprise! The Lamborghini Countach Is Officially Returning

Lamborghini has just released breaking news that the iconic Countach supercar we all remember is really coming back. You may be wondering if this is a rumor, early April Fools Day scandal, or unofficial teaser, but it‘s not. In fact, the news comes straight from Lamborghini itself. The Countach will be a limited-production model for its 50th anniversary, and it is coming to Monterey Car Week at Pebble Beach later this week. This means it won't be an early Aventador replacement, but it could preview one. Lamborghini released a foggy teaser image of a wedge-shaped car under a mysterious cover, making it evident that the retro design from the original will remain, but in a modernized way that matches the current lineup.

Performance-wise, we won't be seeing a full V12 anywhere. Instead, expect a hybridized version with supercapacitor technology inspired by the Sian hypercar. Even though the Countach will be a hybrid, you will still see the same groundbreaking performance that comes from any Lamborghini, and power outputs should look similar to the Aventador's. A few leaks reveal the Countach's full name, Countach LPI 800-4, meaning the engine will be longitudially mounted (like the Aventador Ultimae) in mid-engined format. The "I" confirms the fully hybrid powertrain, as seen in the 2014 Asterion concept. 800-4 further reveals that the Countach will make around 800 horsepower and have an all-wheel drive setup. Apparently, Lamborghini has been accepting Countach orders for a while, so the production numbers will definitely surpass fifty units. Unlike other Lamborghini few-offs, the Countach might only be offered in coupe form and no convertible due to its edgy, unique shape. After all, the original Countach was a coupe-only affair.

We are flattered that Lamborghini is bringing back the legendary Countach for the 21st century, name and all, even though it may be temporary. This hybrid supercar will make for a fitting 50th anniversary for the Countach and a sight to see at Pebble Beach.
