Jaguar is not what it used to be. We've heard reports of many models being on the line. In some cases, the brand's future altogether seems grim. The XE compact sedan is officially gone in the US, and the recently refreshed XF midsize sedan is also going the wrong way. The XJ large sedan was discontinued this year awaiting a huge redesign that will see it switch to an EV. This is basically Jaguar's only hope at this point.
Rumors stated that the all-electric Tesla-fighter could be unveiled this month despite several delays, but recent reports say the opposite. Apparently, Jaguar's new CEO plans to cancel several future models including the 2022 XJ. But, a final decision will be announced next month.
Why is Jaguar interested in dropping models that could save them? The brand doesn't think their current business model is either logical or stable. As Jaguar continues to fall, their relative Land Rover continues to rise. Evidence of that would be sales numbers. The F Pace and E Pace SUVs saw decent sales, but compared to the Land Rover Evoque and Velar, it was nothing. The problem about dropping upcoming EVs, specifically the XJ, is that Jaguar has already invested millions in supplies and materials in order to produce the XJ EV.
Two other models under consideration of cancellation are a future Range Rover, and a Jaguar model that is to share the XJ's new platform. The Land Rover Discovery Sport could also face discontinuation. JLR's CEO is surprised at the company's slow pace towards electrification, and the only way to fix it could be dropping models. Jaguar's decision isn't final yet, but the pressure is on whether the XJ will succeed or fail.
