The Subaru WRX STI performance sedan is arguably the company's most popular model among enthusiasts. When it's not sitting around at a car meet, it's probably competing in a rally or going airborne in a Gymkhana video. Subaru has also kept the momentum with several special editions, including the WRX S209 and super rare Impreza 22B. As the next-generation WRX rolls into showrooms, fans are eagerly waiting for the even quicker STI version to arrive. But Subaru has crushing news concerning the next STI: it's not happening.
Subaru says that the new WRX will not spawn an STI variant at all, as the brand shifts its focus to electrification. However, Subaru also stated that it is "exploring opportunities" for an electrified STI. This means that if the WRX STI does return, it won't have an internal combustion engine under the hood. Since the 2022 WRX does not boast currently any electric powertrains, the next STI probably won't be released until an entirely new generation arrives. If this is true, those who have been anticipating the new STI will have to wait for a very long time.
As a message of hope, Subaru concluded its statement with, "we also look forward to incorporating the essence of STI into out next generation of vehicles." Subaru could simply be trying to make enthusiasts feel better, but we think it hints that other STI vehicles are on the way besides the WRX. The rumored BRZ STI, perhaps? Or possibly an EV?
Whether or not the STI does come back, we know that it will not be the same as the WRX STI we know today.
Will you miss the WRX STI?
