Last year, Volvo debuted their first all-electric model, the XC40 Recharge small crossover, based on the XC40. After announcing their future plans to go all-electric within the next decade, they have released their latest EV, the C40 Recharge coupe crossover. The new model will be sold exclusively online, starting a new trend that will continue with all new Volvo EVs. The premium automaker also mentioned that deliveries will be very quick.
Right away, we notice that the C40 was largely inspired by the XC40 Recharge, with the same small headlights and a boxy shape. The sleek roofline is followed by the taillights that extend up to the sides of the rear window, a familiar Volvo design element. We also notice the two-tone roof, which is something we have been seeing on many new crossovers. There are also new 84-pixel LED headlights that avoid distracting or blinding other drivers while lighting up the road in front of you. Underpinning the C40 Recharge is a 78 kWh battery, included with twin electric motors, both placed on a different axle. The C40 reaches 0-60 miles per hour in a decent 4.7 seconds. The familiar 402 horsepower with 486 pound-feet of torque really takes after the XC40's electric counterpart. The C40 Recharge can charge up to 80% in a log, but short to today's standards 40 minutes. The range is said to be at around 260 miles per charge for now.
Volvo's eco-friendliness goes beyond the electric powertrain, though. The sleek interior is completely free of leather. We don't know what Volvo wrapped the seats and dashboard in yet, though. But, there are amazing backlit ambient lighting accents positioned across the dashboard. The C40 Recharge includes a new digital instrument cluster, a conventional gear shift, and a panoramic moonroof. Volvo has also integrated Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play into the C40. The infotainment system hasn't been mentioned much, so expect similar software to the XC40 Recharge. But luckily, Volvo's latest model will feature over-the-air updates, improving range, technology performance, and other features.
All C40 Recharge models will be purchased online, included with the Care by Volvo customer service package. It will mix repairs and warranty, roadside assistance, home charging options, and insurance all in one package. No information on the MSRP or US release date has been announced, but we should expect it to start at around $40,000 ad come on sale this winter if the fall production start date is any indication.
