With Monterey Car Week just around the corner, automakers are starting to give us sneak peeks of what's in store this year. And there will be plenty of excitement coming from Mercedes's display, which will host the debut of the completely redesigned Mercedes-AMG GT sports car. The Porsche 911 rival will be fully revealed on August 18, and joined by a special-edition variant of the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster from the company's Manufaktur customization program.
Alongside the new car debuts, Mercedes will also show off its outrageous, G-Class-based Project Mondo art piece from earlier this year, as well as the recently-revealed Vision One-Eleven concept. The latter vehicle contains a groundbreaking axial flux electric motor, which according to Mercedes, is smaller and lighter than today's motors. Travelling further back in time, Mercedes will also be displaying two classic supercharged W06 series vehicles.
Moving back to the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT, spy shots indicate an evolutionary design, but with added influence from the AMG SL convertible. The GT sports car will also borrow a new 4.0 liter V8 from the SL, which means it could offer both 469- and 577-hp versions. Additionally, the GT could gain a new high-performance variant to battle Porsche's 911 Turbo, using a plug-in hybrid V8 already used in the four-door AMG GT E-Performance. If true, the new plug-in powertrain could generate up to 831 hp and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque, which would obliterate the numbers seen in the 911 Turbo.
Are you looking forward to the new Mercedes-AMG GT?
