While the latest Nissan Z makes for an enticing package, the Japanese sports car is about to get even more appealing with a new Nismo variant coming this summer. The announcement comes as a surprise, especially considering that the hardcore two-door has been all but revealed in a short teaser video released by Nissan.

The video in question features three-time Formula Drift champion Chris Forsberg behind the wheel, putting the Z Nismo through a tire-squealing ride that results in clouds of white smoke trailing behind the sports car. Towards the beginning of the video, Forsberg opens the hood to reveal the exact same twin-turbo V6 found in the regular Z. Nissan hasn't mentioned any specifics on the new Nismo model, so we don't know whether power has been upgraded from the current 400 hp rating. Another burning question relates to the automatic transmission shown in the clip. While a nine-speed auto is offered in the regular Z, a six-speed manual comes as standard. Here's to hoping that's the same for the Nismo model.

In terms of what we do know, the Nismo features distinct exterior styling with a new grille that sets it apart from the regular model's rather controversial square-grilled face. There's also a front splitter, aggressive side skirts, and an edgier rear bumper, as well as signature red stripes on the lower bodywork and Nismo badging inside and out. The Z's throwback ducktail spoiler has also been upgraded, as it now wraps around the entire rear fascia. Inside, the Nismo appears to have racing-oriented bucket seats, a starter button finished in bright red, and a digital instrument cluster.

Nissan says the Z Nismo will begin arriving at dealers this summer, so a full announcement should be coming very soon.
