While the Japanese automakers are busy taking the wraps off their latest creations at the 2023 Tokyo Mobility Show, Toyota is still dividing a portion of its attention to the Camry and RAV4-hungry buyers in the U.S.
The auto giant has released a teaser showing what is widely believed to be the Crown Estate SUV, which has previously made an appearance at home in Japan in pre-production form. This means it will join the existing Crown sedan-crossover mashup in Toyota's U.S. Crown lineup, while serving as the fourth addition to the growing model line over in Japan. A closeup of the SUV's left-side taillight was accompanied with the cryptic message "see you soon," which means a reveal shouldn't be too far away.
Toyota also took the time to describe the upcoming Crown as an "all-wheel-drive hybrid electric mid-size SUV." This means it will slot above the smaller RAV4, while sitting just below the three-row Highlander. Interestingly, Toyota already has the Venza hybrid competing in the midsize space, though the Crown designation for this new addition means it could be marketed as something slightly more upscale.
While it's essentially been confirmed that the Crown SUV will come with a hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain, it remains to be seen which one Toyota ends up giving this crossover. Among the brand's plethora of electrified powertrains, it's likely that the Crown will pair dual electric motors with either a 2.5-liter or a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine under the hood. The Japanese-spec model is said to offer a plug-in hybrid variant, but U.S. customers are likely to miss out on that version.
The Crown SUV could break cover any day now, but we expect that Toyota will at least wait until the Tokyo Mobility Show ends.
Do you think this will have a place in Toyota's crowded SUV lineup?
